What is Konglish?-Season1

Konglish(=Korean+English) is a term which were invented by Koreans through combinations of English words or applying a new meaning for usage of a common English word. Korean frequently uses the Konglish in daily life, and also I frequently use Konglish when I talk with my Korean friends.

Today, I will introduce the Konglish what Korean frequently use.

1. I’m in slump

Slump means the status of mind and body or the work is temporary poor that feel the depression. ‘I am in a bad mood these days’ or ‘I feel down these days’ will be the same meaning of ‘I am in slump’ which Korean use.

According to the statistical data, 97.7% of Korean employees had experienced the slump, and there are four main reasons why they feel the depression.

1) Exhaust because of the excessive work

2) Experience difficulties in adjusting after changing job or doing a new work

3) Conflict relation between boss, co-worker or subordinate

4) Emotional pressure because of anxiety about the future or burden of the performance.

Generally not only the employees but also the students, athletes use this word frequently.

2. Skinship

Skinship(=Skin+relationship) is generally used for any kind of physical contact such as caressing, kissing, hugging between two loving ones, especially boyfriend and girlfriend. It is similar as “cuddling”, “snuggle”, “petting”.

3. Condition: Koreans use this word to refer to their body’s condition. It is commonly used such as “Today, my condition is not good” ,“Condition is good”.

4. Eye shopping: It means “window shopping”

5. Cunning

This is the same word as “cheating”. But the cheating has more wide meaning than cunning. Cunning is just used in exam. When someone look at the other person’s paper or look at their hands which is written down, the word “cunning” is used.

6. Fighting: It is similar as “Cheer up” , “Go, team” in English. It also refers “You can do it”, “You will be good” and so on.

7. Dutch pay: It means “Dutch treat” in English.

8. Arbeit: It means “part-time job” and came from the German “Arbeit”.

9. Team: This is usually used for the group in a company that has a common goal.

It is also used as “Team project” or in a big company’s group is divided as finance team, human resource team, marketing team…etc.

Housing style

1.  Apart: This is the abbreviation word of ‘Apartment’. The meaning of apartment in Korea is the place of private own.

2. One Room: This is the apartment for one person especially single or young person. It is same as “studio apartment”. When the students enter the college, and if the college’s location is far from their home, they normally live in One Room, boarding house or dormitory.

3. Villa: this is a small-sized condominium that usually from 3-5 floors, two units per floor. It is also the common housing style in Seoul. However, the most usual housing style in Seoul is the apartment.

4. Office Tel(=office+hotel)

Usually a small, modern room that has basic facilities including a kitchenette and a bathroom with a shower. However, the difference with ‘One-Room’ is ‘Office Tel’ is also used for working that it is a multi-purpose building with residential and commercial units. The advantage of the ‘Office Tel’ is for minimising the commute time.

Duplex type of Office Tel got popular in Korea, because it is good for making use of space.

 

 

 

5. Condo: It is ‘time-share resort’ in English. It is usually located in ski resort or famous tour places in Korea. Normally Korean stay in condo when they take a trip.

Climbing Bukhansan Mountain, Seoul, Korea-Beagundae course

IMG_0194Now the weather in Korea is getting warm that it is good to go hiking.:) 13 mountains which you can see in below picture are famous places in Seoul that many people prefer to go.

I hiked Mt, Bukhansan which is one of the famous mountain in Korea at the end of October last year. The name of Bukhansan pronounces as the meaning of “North Korea + mountain” in Korean, but it does not related with North Korea. It just means “Big mountain in the north of Seoul”. It has more than 10 courses, but some of the courses are rough that you have to choose the proper hiking trail according to your abilities. I chose the Bae-gun-dae track. The distance of this trail is about 2.17 mile(3.5 km) and take 2-3 hours.

How to go there?

You can go only with public transportation without car. I went there with subway and bus. First, leave in Gupabal subway station(Subway line3, Exit 1) and take bus 704 or 34 public bus, then leave in Bukkansan Mountain entrance bus stop.

The distance of the Gupabal and the Bukkansan mountain entrance bus stop is 2.73 mile(4.4km) and it will take about 21minutes. Otherwise, taking taxi from Gupabal subway is also the good way to go. Because taxi is quite cheap in Korea that it will cost about $5-6 from Gupabal station to  Bukkansanseong entrance .

 

When is the best time for hiking?

The best time for hiking in Korea is fall, because of the autumn leaves. Normally you can see the autumn leaves between middle of the October and early November. However, spring is warm that from March to May is also good for hiking.:)

If you hike the Mt. Bukkansan, you can see the Buddhist temples.With 1700 years of Buddhist history, almost every mountain in Korea has the Buddhist temples.

Mt.Bukhansan has the mountain fortress which is called Bukhansanseong, and It has 8 gates. If you hike this trail, you can see one of the gates which is called Bae-gun-bong-am-mun(백운봉암문 in Korean). It was built on the highest spot(attitude of 725 meters) among the fortress gates of the Bukhansanseong, and is made in 1711.

I was surprised how people built the gate in the high spot of the mountain! If you pass this gate, the top of the mountain is almost there. However, it is quite hard to climb the final trail.This is because you have to climb the steep rock and some part of it, you have to hold the rope to climb. In fact, I was really scary when I climbed the ROCK with rope.

Korean restaurants culture-7 things you should know

Today I will introduce the common Korean restaurant culture which could be not common in other countries.

1. Bell

Many Korean restaurants have bell on the table. This bell is for calling the waiter as pressing the button in airplane for calling the stewardess. When you press the bell, your table number is shown in the screen which is in the wall and also sounds ‘ding-dong’. In some restaurant, if you press the button, the table number is appeared in the waiter’s clock as you can see in the above picture.

If there is the bell in the Korean restaurant, press it when you want to call the waiter. The bell is good for calling the waiter quickly.:) However, if there is no bell, call the waiters as “Ju-gi-yo” which means Hey! Then waiters will come to you. There are many different Korean word to call the waiters, but this could be used for everyone regardless of gender or age of the waiters that I recommend to use this word.

2. Pay your bills in the counter

Except the expensive western restaurants, you should pay the restaurant bill from the counter in most of the Korean restaurant. You don’t have to wait waiter to pay the bill. Just bring the bill which is on the table or if there is no bill, just go to the counter after finished eating, and then pay money in the counter. Base on my experience, comparing paying the restaurant bill to the waiter in other countries, paying bill in counter is more faster. In my opinion, one of the reason why customers pay bill in the counter is in Korean culture which Korean like to do many things quickly. I’m sure many Korean customers didn’t like to wait until the waiters come to their table for paying bill. Also in Korea there is no tip culture that just pay the food price.

3.  Self services and free side dishes

In Korea if you want to eat more side dishes like Kimchi, veggie…etc, those are free.:) However, in some restaurants,  if you want to eat more, you have to take it by yourself. Also there is some places where the water is also self service. If you want to drink water you have to bring it by yourself from the water purifier.

4. Sitting on the floor

Traditionally Korean sit on the floor and have the underfloor heating system  which is called the Ondol. Accordingly, some of the Korean restaurants have the sit on the floor style. So if you visit this kind of the Korean restaurant, first take off your shoes, and sit down on the floor. The floor is warm that it is good in winter, but sitting on the floor can be uncomfortable.

Korean sit on the floor in cross-legged. But at the first time, this position can be uncomfortable to you. In fact, even I lived in whole my life in Korea, this cross-legged position is still uncomfortable and if I sit more than 20 minutes I get pins and needles in my legs.

 

5. Toilet roll is in restaurant

You will feel the culture shock at the first time, when found the toilet roll in the Korean restaurant’s table. Some of the restaurant put the toilet roll itself on the table, or other uses the case of the toilet roll as you can see in below picture.

I don’t know why…but in some Korean restaurant use the toilet roll, and people wipe their mouth with loo roll. However, me and many Korean also feel uncomfortable when we see the toilet roll on the restaurant.

 

 

 

6. Can wear the Apron

In some of the restaurant, the apron for customers are prepared and if you ask for it, they give you. It is preventing for getting food on the clothes. Many Korean food are boiling soup in the table which is in front of the customers that some of the soup can be easily splash to the clothes. So Korean restaurant especially serve the soup commonly uses the apron for customers. If you think the soup can splash to your clothes during boiling, ask to the waiter to give the apron. Then they will provide it to you.:)

7. Instant coffee machine

Screen Shot 2015-03-08 at 10.23.10 PMIn many Korean restaurants, there is instant coffee machine which is for the customers service. 🙂 It is free that, after you finished the meal you can take it.:) This is the self-services that you have to bring it by yourself. The taste is sweet and have the same taste as the Korea instant mix coffee.

Are Scissors commonly used in Korea restaurant?

The answer is YES. In Korea Kitchen scissors are commonly used not only in restaurants but also in home.

I remember my American friend was surprised when he saw people are cutting the noodles with scissors in Korea restaurant. However, in many type of the Korean restaurants use the scissors. Today I will introduce which type of the Korean food is commonly used the scissors.

1. Korean Barbecue

At first, grill the whole meat and then when it is cooked cut the meat with scissors as you can see in below.

The scissors are more easy to cut the meat rather than the knife that almost all of the Korean barbecue restaurants use the scissors for cutting the meat. Also, in some of the restaurant waiter cuts the meat, but mostly the customers should bake and cut the meat by themselves.

2. Naengmyeon(Korean cold noodles)

Normally Korean cold noodles are durable that it is quite hard to cut the noodles only with your teeth. Accordingly, normally people cut the noodles with the scissors first for the cross shape as you can see in the above picture. If you can’t see the scissors in  Naengmyeon house, ask to the waiter. Then he will bring it for you.

 

3. Seollengtang(soup of bone and stew meat) and Kalguksu(Knife-cut noodles)

Seollengtang is a Korean soup made from ox bones, brisket and other cuts and Kalguksu is the handmade Korean noodle dish which knife-cut wheat flour noodles served in a large bowl and other ingredients. Both of the dishes also serve the kimchi and the radish kimchi as the side dishes as you can see in the below picture.

Then you have to take these out to the plate with chopsticks or with tongs by yourself as much as you will eat, and then cut it with scissors to small pieces.

3. Spicy Seafood Stew

Seafood in stew is slippery and little tough that it should be cut in to pieces before eating it. At first, seafood stew which need to be boiled came out with scissors and tongs in table. Then the seafood stew is boiled in the customers’ table and the customers cut the seafood by themselves.

4. Korean Pork Cutlet

Pork cutlet is served with fork and knifes in many pork cutlet restaurants, but some of them give the scissors instead of knives for cutting the food. I assume this is because for some Korean cutting with scissors are easier than the knives.

5. Korean street food

Spicy rice cake(called Tteokbokki) and fried snacks(called Twigim); sweet potatoes, shimp, dumplings, squid, vegetables etc are one of the common Korean street food. As you can see in the above picture, when people cook the food, they frequently use scissors when cutting the food like fries, fish cake, eggs to put those in the Tteokbokki soup.

Those 5 examples are just the part of the Korean foods which use the scissors. There are more list of the Korean food which commonly use the scissors. Then you will be curious why Korean use the scissors frequently.

In my opinion, there are main 2 reasons why Korean frequently uses the scissors for cutting food.

1. Korea Hurry-hurry culture

Korea has Hurry-hurry culture(called “Pali-Pali” in Korean) and many Korean has a habit of handling matters quickly and prematurely. For example, normally many Korean eat meal within 20 minutes, drink alcohol quickly and drunk fast, typical Korean restaurants serve the food fast. So I assume Korean also prefer the tools which can cut the food fast, easily and the scissors fit well in Korean characteristic.

2. Cooked by customers 

In many Korean food restaurants, customers have to cook by themselves for some part of the process of cooking. For example, grill the beef in Korean Barbecue, bowl the sausage stew and bowl the Bulgogi hot pot in the customer table. Accordingly, the tools, which the customers could easily cut and not dangerous, should be prepared and the scissors was the proper tool in these requirement. I think the knife will be little more dangerous for using compare to the scissors.

3. Many side dishes

Korean food has many side dishes in one meal compared to other countries dishes. In typical Korean food restaurants have 11~25 side dishes that the possibility of having food which is hard to cut in one meal is high. Accordingly, the scissors are getting common for the use of cutting food.

Tips for Skiing in Konjiam Resort

I went to the Konjiam ski resort on Saturday. The most big reason why I visited here is because the winter season of ski is almost over. I wanted to snowboard one more time in this season! Konjiam is near with Seoul that it is easy to go there. It took only 1hour with car from Gangnam district where is the central in Seoul. One month ago, I visited the Yongpyong ski resort where the biggest ski resort in Korea, and today I want to introduce about Konjiam with partially comparing with the Yongpyong ski resort.

The Pros and Cons which I felt after snowboarding in Konjiam ski resort are in below.

Pros

1. Starting time and finishing time for skiing is flexible that you can choose any length of time, and can

pay money depend of the time. It is called “Me-TimePass” in Konjiam resort. Also the starting time is from the time when you enter the door which you can see in below picture.

Meanwhile, Yongpyong ski resort’ ski ticket time is divided in Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night/Twilight that you can only choose the time among them. Accordingly even I want to take ski about 1-2hours, I need to buy 4hours ticket. I definitely think the ski ticket system of Konjiam is much more reasonable and convenient for the customers.

2. Don’t need to worry for losing ticket.

Yongpyong ski resort’ ski ticket is made of paper that I had to ring in the clothes. However, it might be possible to loose the ticket, if the ticket’s ring get fall out. Actually one of my friends loose the ticket, and could not snowboard more on that day:((

Meanwhile, Konjiam ski resort is using the E-tickets that when you take the lift you just have to touch the machine with the ticket. Accordingly, you can use the ticket just by putting it inside the pocket, and you don’t have to worry about losing ti.:))

3. Reservation system in Konjiam

Konjiam started the reservation system for the first time in Korea’ ski resort that they give the admission to the limited people. So once you ski in Konjiam,  you don’t have to worry about the excessively crowded. The time for waiting the lift is not that long.

Cons

1. Konjiam ski resort is not that big. Officially Kanjiam says they have 9 slopes but actually it seems to have only 4 slopes.

So comparing with the Yongpyong resort which has 20 slopes, Konjiam is small. If you’re someone who prefers to ski in diverse slopes, skiing in Konjiam would be little boring.

2. The quality of snow

Konjiam snow quality is not that bad, but Yongpyong’ snow is better than Konjiam. This is because of the location and the temperature. Konjiam is near with Seoul that the average of January temperature is -3.1degrees(26.4). On the other hand, Yongpyong resort is in the highlands that the average temperature of January is -12.6 degree(9.3).

3. The distance of parking lot and the slope is quite far that you have to walk that distance with carrying the ski or snowboard.

Who will be good to visit?

If you live in Seoul or Gyeonggi(provinces surrounding Seoul) and want to ski only for one day, I recommend you to visit here. I came here about 10 times, but only for one day or half day without sleeping in the ski resort. Accordingly, it doesn’t cost the lodging expenses that I could saved money. 🙂
